Days Of The Week

How to teach kindergartners the days of the week in the correct order:

Teaching kindergartners the days of the week can either be a challenging or a new, exciting topic. At this point, for the most part, children know that each day is a new day and from week to week a pattern occurs. There are many ways to go about teaching this topic; however, this is how I would suggest teaching it.

The day before this lesson, the teacher will teach about a calendar to the students. The teacher will show students how calendars are set up and explain why we use them. This will lead into the Days of the Week lesson plan.
An example of this calendar would be:
Objective: Students will learn the Days of the Week in the correct order by watching and learning a musical video and participating in arrangement activities.

The teacher will start the lesson by asking students what they learned the day before about calendars. After the students respond the teacher will introduce the topic of the days of the week. The teacher will explain how each day comes and goes and at the end of the week, the sequence of days starts all over again. The teacher will use the calendar as a visual piece to this explanation. The teacher will then use the days of the week poster, I attached below, to show the students a vertical order of the days of the week. The teacher will have students repeat after him/her reciting each day. Next, the teacher will show students on the SMART Board, a video that lyrically explains the order of the days of the week. The teacher will play the video three times. The first time students will watch and listen, the second time the teacher will encourage students to try to sing along, and then the third time, the students will all sing along together. The teacher will then have students sing the song without the help of the video. Lastly, the teacher will pass out activity sheets, which I attached below. This activity is to help students arrange the days of the week by themselves and show the teacher if they have indeed learned the lesson. First, the teacher will cover up or take down any posters of the days of the week, so students can't cheat. However, leaving up a blank calendar would be helpful for the students. The teacher will explain what the students are to do for the activity. Students are to color the circles with the days of the week and then they are to cut the circles out and paste them in the correct order on the caterpillar, starting with Sunday. The teacher will walk around the class to help students with any problems they are having and encourage them to use the song they've learned in completing the activity. After the students have finished their activities, the teacher will post them on the bulletin board outside the classroom.

This lesson plan is fun and easy and students will definitely love the activities. I'm sure the song will be stuck in their heads for years to come. Please leave a comment and tell me what you think!
Enjoy!
